As part of the project Schools of Tomorrow, a beautiful playground was created on top of the roof of this Belgian school where the pupils can play to their heart’s content.
Schools of Tomorrow
The project Schools of Tomorrow is an initiative of the Flemish government and the public and private sector. Its aim is to build or renovate schools using the most advanced, modern technologies. The project came to life in 2006 to reduce the resources needed for the maintenance of schools in the coming thirty years. Therefore great value is attached to the sustainability of the products and only materials of the highest quality are being used.
Royal Grass® XPlay
Artificial grass is the ideal subsurface for a playground on top of a school roof. It is maintenance-friendly, remains green throughout the year, and is resistant to intensive use. The installation of artificial grass on the rooftop playground was done by VD Kunstgrassen, our official Royal Grass® dealer. According to Dimitri Vanclooster it is extremely important for projects like these to use the right type of artificial grass. “The school was looking for a high quality solution for the long term. For that reason, we selected a type of artificial grass with the most durable fibres.”
We have used Royal Grass® XPlay for the rooftop playground. This type of artificial grass has been specifically designed for playgrounds. It is the strongest and most wear-free artificial grass in the collection of Royal Grass®.
Sound proofing and shock-absorbent
As the playground is on top of the roof, it was important there would be no noise nuisance in the building. That is why a shock-absorbent layer of 1.5 cm of expanded clay granules has been placed on top of the construction. This layer ensures extra playing comfort for the children and in addition offers the needed soundproofing.
