Artificial turf for green roof

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) has a new head office in Sochi. What is most striking is the fact that the roof is fitted with solar panels and artificial turf.

Next year, the 22nd Winter Olympics will be staged from 7 to 23 February at the Russian city of Sochi. Major efforts are underway to ensure the numerous offices and sports facilities as well as accommodation for athletes, coaches, the press and various organisations will be fully in place by next year. The higher floors of a number of these office buildings overlook the flat green roof of the IOC head office.

Initially, the idea was to deck the roof in natural grass. However, it proved to be practically impossible to preserve the beautiful green of natural grass, especially with solar panels on the roof. So the organisation decided to go with the most logical alternative: artificial grass. The choice fell on Royal Grass® Silk35. The artificial grass field measures 2800 m2 – a large surface area for a landscape application and a unique reference indeed!
