Thanks to Royal Grass®, the sports field and playground of a school in Kuala Lumpur has recently been provided with artificial grass. Sri Kuala Lumpur is an international school for primary and secondary education in the capital of Malaysia and has a large campus, with a spacious sports complex. Formerly, it was an 1800 square meter playground with natural grass, but due to the intensive use the grass was always quickly worn out and needed to be replaced every year.
Last year, a new parking area was built underneath the sports field and playground; a good moment to decide to remove the natural grass. The construction and the roof of the parking garage were made of concrete as this turned out to be the most sustainable solution. However, for sports or playing this was not very appealing. For this reason, the school looked for a sustainable, safe and child-friendly solution for the playground. And artificial grass was the ideal outcome.
Artificial grass suitable for a playground
When looking for a partner to help the school with realising the ideas, they contacted the official Royal Grass® dealer Eco Outdoor in Kuala Lumpur. Eco Outdoor designed a tailor-made plan for a playground with artificial grass. Eco Outdoor suggested Royal Grass® Exclusive to be used as the best type of artificial grass for the sports field and playground. This type of artificial grass has an above average strong fibre and a highly natural appearance. For the infill between the fibres a special, clean and washed sand was chosen.
Naturally, a playground needs to be safe and pleasant to play on. To achieve this a shock-absorbing layer was placed underneath the artificial turf to reduce the impact on the body and joints during playtime. The artificial grass combined with this shock-absorbing layer ensures maximum safety, playability and sustainability.
Happy with the result
Since the natural grass has been replaced with Royal Grass® artificial grass and the new playground has been opened, it is being used intensively by the pupils. Hanif Othman Merican, director of Sri Kuala Lumpur, is highly satisfied with the results. He is especially surprised by how the artificial turf remains cool in the hot Malaysian climate. “Both students and teachers are extremely enthusiastic. They love playing and exercising on the new grounds. One of the advantages is that it is a pleasure to play on the grass, even on hot days. We were planning on installing a sprinkler system to cool the field, but this does not seem to be necessary.”
